Our environmental vision

Since 2004, the Zoo de Granby has been implementing responsible environmental practices in all aspects of its operations, notably by encouraging recycling, saving drinking water and electricity, and purchasing enviro-friendly materials and supplies.

And a new logo has been designed to reflect our environmental vision.

Visitors will come across the new logo at several sites within the Zoo. It serves to identify the main steps taken to reduce water and energy consumption, and to protect the environment.

The Zoo de Granby was recognized during the Énergia Contest organized by the Association québécoise pour la maîtrise de l’énergie (AQME). The Jury Award went to the Zoo de Granby's Energy Consumption Reduction Efforts project, introduced during its 2005-2010 modernization plan.

Saving water

All the animals at the Zoo need water to drink or even to live. Given the very nature of its activities, the Zoo de Granby and its Amazoo Water Park consume large quantities of water. In fact, in 2003 the Zoo was the 2nd largest consumer of drinking water in the City of Granby (approximately 403,000 m3/year).

As part of its environmental action plan, in 2004 the Zoo de Granby implemented a drinking water conservation and wastewater reduction program. The original goal targeted was a 40% reduction in water consumption, and this goal was easily surpassed, with a 70% reduction level being reached on site, the equivalent of use for 1000 single-family households.

Today, the annual water consumption is approximately 120,000 m3.

Our steps taken

  • Identification and repair of many leaks in the water supply system
  • Updating of new chemical procedures for pools
  • Better management of outside water basins and filtration systems
  • Use of pressure washers for cleanup

Saving energy

The Zoo de Granby continues its ongoing environmental improvement goals by taking concrete steps with regard to energy consumption.

Our steps taken

  • Centralized management of heating and air conditioning
  • Energy studies for all existing and future buildings at the Zoo (electricity, natural gas, alternatives)
  • Installation of two off-peak thermal storage systems
  • Geothermal energy (drilling of 81 wells)
  • Presence sensors to activate washroom lighting
  • Solar energy and LED lighting
  • Heat exchangers
  • Natural skylights

Recycling

All employees have been trained in the benefits of recycling, and recycling efforts have been stepped up year after year. Steps taken at the Zoo can also be seen with visitors and garbage bins combined with recycling bins. At the Zoo de Granby, they go hand in hand.

Our steps taken

  • Nearly 4000 tons of material has been recycled or reclaimed since 2005
  • Recycling of kitchen waste, coffee grounds and filters
  • Vermicomposting
  • Grasscycling

Eco-friendly purchases

Here are just a few examples of eco-friendly materials at the Zoo.

Our purchases

  • Organic soaps and degreasers. They pose no danger to humans, animals or the environment.
  • Urban furniture and Amazoo Water Park games manufactured from recycled plastic.
  • Perdure (thermally-treated) wood used for exterior siding of new buildings. This new technique allows the use of wood not normally suitable for this purpose (e.g. poplar). The wood is heated to a very high temperature (275°F), making it water repellent.
  • Styrofoam is banned from all our restaurants.
  • Recycled plastic or cloth bags.
  • Ventilation pipes for new buildings is made from cloth fabric rather than galvanized steel, whose manufacturing process creates more pollution.
  • Choice of eco-friendly paints.

Over the next few years, the Zoo de Granby will pursue its goal to become more eco-friendly. And there's no lack of ideas!
